Parody by JinaH, ChloeW (2020)

Quarantine

My inspirations for this project were about life in quarantine. Chloe and I wrote this parody so that others could relate to our experiences, which would, in turn, bring them comfort that they weren't alone during these difficult times. Our lighthearted and humorous lyrics were meant to uplift those listening specifically to the students who find home learning strange and unfamiliar. Through this experience, I was able to see that art is not just defined by things we see but also by things we hear! I never thought of music as a part of art; however, after this experience, I realized that the creativity used is not different from creativity needed to create paintings or drawings. I hope to use what I learned in this project to produce some of my own music and grow my understanding of Pro Tools.

Struggles that we encountered when writing and putting together this parody were coming up with lyrics that fit the beat of the song to match it up and keep the original flow of the song. At first, we were trying to rewrite the lyrics simply by coming up with sentences that fit our theme of life in quarantine; however, when we began to sing it out loud, it sounded as if it was a completely different song. To fix our mistake and make it sound more seamless, we counted each line's syllables in the original song. We replaced them with other lyrics to match our theme while keeping the number of syllables. Since writing the lyrics took so long and we took extra care to make it as perfect as possible, it is the part I am the proudest of. The original song Dynamite was written to be a pick-me-up song for those experiencing hardships during Covid-19, and the fact that we were able to keep the positive, relatable emotions even in our own lyrics made me happy and satisfied. Additionally, when using pro tools, we had issues when recording as we both sang the song at slightly different paces, making it difficult to hear the lyrics well. Hence, we had to take many recordings to match them as best they could. We also sang at different keys to make each individual voice stand out more and bring more humor to the song as it sounded more ridiculous!
